07 May Enter The Data Ninja!
Data, Data, Data! Data collection is at the forefront of all businesses and social issues in this digital age. The process of gathering and measuring information in an established systematic fashion enables us to answer stated research questions, test hypotheses, and evaluate outcomes. The data collection component of research is common to all fields of study including physical and social sciences, humanities, business, etc. While methods vary by discipline, the emphasis on ensuring accurate and honest collection remains the same.
This is where our new Data Ninja, Tian-Yuan Zhao, comes in.Tian has recently joined Hack For Big Choices to help us learn from all of the data we gather about social issues at our hackathons.
Let’s hear Tian describe himself in his own words:
“I’m a versatile Systems/Industrial/Process Engineering student at the University of Toronto with a minor in Business Engineering. I possess competencies, passions, and sensitivities in the Engineering – UI/UX/IX Design, Data Science/Analysis/Mining, and Front-End Web Development, the Arts – writing, singing, dancing, piano playing, voice acting, acting, composing/arranging, photography, and videography, and Business – tech entrepreneurship, social entrepreneurship, strategic planning, public speaking, hustling, and growth hacking realms. My ultimate dream is to become a polymath or Renaissance Man.”
The following is a favorite quote of his:
“The patterns are simple, but followed together, they make for a whole that is wiser than the sum of its parts. Go for a walk; cultivate hunches; write everything down, but keep your folders messy; embrace serendipity; make generative mistakes; take on multiple hobbies; frequent coffeehouses and other liquid networks; follow the links; let others build on your ideas; borrow, recycle; reinvent. Build a tangled bank.” ~ Steven Johnson, Where Good Ideas Come From: The Natural History of Innovation.
Tian is full of the type of energy and ambition that we search for, and we greatly look forward to his contribution towards our mission here at Hack For Big Choices!
